Why do we read so many books? Why is the addiction so real?
Because books take you to places you have never been to
and they introduce you to people you’ve never met.
Yet you yearn for those places and people like they mean everything to you.
This book made me long for a place I have never been to. Alaska! They say you make only one mistake in Alaska. The second one will kill you. Oh how my heart wants to see this place with such notorious winter and such beautiful shores, the cruel layers of frozen ice and the beautiful forests. And the people! The people who gave up on the “outside” world to live the life as they want to, in middle of nowhere.
They say places like these bring out the best or the worst in you. Leni was afraid of losing herself, and her family in the The Great Alone, Alaska. Her father Ernt never came back the same after Vietnam, and her mother who was so desperately and hopelessly in love with him, never gave up on this new man Ernt had become. Love makes us all do crazy things, so Mama did exactly what Dad said. He said he wanted to start over in Alaska, so they moved to Alaska and there started the new phase in Leni’s life. She became the hunter, the warrior, the lover and the survivor. She became Alaska, and Alaska became her. Then she fell in love with Matthew and tides were turned. Love does one more cruel thing. It makes us weak. Until we learn that our weakness can become our greatest strength only if we accept it.
I will not give you any spoilers, except that after reading The Nightingale and now The Great Alone, I have become this author’s fan. I love how she makes her characters the superheroes we all have inside us, but haven’t met yet. Leni’s dilemmas are so relatable, yet if given the choice to choose between love and family, whose side would you end up on? Do people and places ever leave us even if we leave them?
One more thing, the heartwarming climax made me cry a lot. So tears alert. Keep tissues handy near the middle of the book.
I gave this book 5 stars, because it deserves nothing less.
